Short answer: No. WhatsApp doesn't accept virtual (VoIP) numbers, and when we tried a TINE US number in October 2026, WhatsApp wouldn't register it. Keep WhatsApp on your normal mobile number. It works worldwide, so US contacts can still message you there. Use a virtual US number for what WhatsApp can't do: ordinary calls and texts with the two-thirds of Americans who don't use WhatsApp.
What Happened When We Tried
We tried to register WhatsApp with a TINE US number. WhatsApp wouldn't register it, so we couldn't create a WhatsApp account on that number.
We're a virtual number provider, and it would be easy to blur this. We won't, because if you buy a number for WhatsApp and it doesn't work, you've wasted your money. Don't buy a TINE number for WhatsApp.
Why WhatsApp Won't Accept Virtual Numbers
This isn't specific to TINE. WhatsApp's own help page on registering your phone number says you must use a supported number, and lists what it won't accept:
- VoIP (internet) numbers, which include virtual numbers like TINE's
- Toll-free numbers
- Paid premium numbers
- Universal access numbers (UAN)
- Landlines, which only the WhatsApp Business app supports
Every phone number has a line type in carrier databases: mobile, landline or VoIP. Apps can look it up. Numbers from Google Voice and most virtual number apps are listed as VoIP, which is a type WhatsApp says it doesn't support.
What about WhatsApp Business?
WhatsApp Business accepts landlines but not VoIP numbers, so a virtual number won't work there either. WhatsApp also says that if you use both WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business, each app needs its own number.
What to Use for WhatsApp Instead
- Your own mobile number, wherever you live. This is the simplest option. WhatsApp runs over the internet, so a contact in the US can message or call your Nigerian, Indian or British number on WhatsApp at no extra cost. You don't need a US number for WhatsApp to work with US contacts.
- A US mobile number from a carrier, on a physical SIM or an eSIM, if you specifically need a +1 number on your WhatsApp profile. Carrier numbers are listed as mobile, which WhatsApp supports. Check the carrier's requirements first, because some need a US address or ID.
- A landline for WhatsApp Business, if your business already has one. WhatsApp Business can verify a landline with a phone call.
Avoid two shortcuts:
- Free "receive SMS online" websites. Anyone can read the codes on those pages, including the one that logs in to WhatsApp, so someone else could take over the account.
- Sellers offering a "WhatsApp US number". If the number is shared or recycled, you can lose the account when its owner reuses it.
When a Virtual US Number Still Helps
WhatsApp is huge in many countries, but in the US only 32% of adults use it, according to Pew Research's 2025 survey. Most of your American clients, landlords, recruiters and shops still call and text a normal phone number. That's where a virtual US number helps:
- US clients and recruiters can call and text you on a +1 number like any local contact, without paying international rates.
- US websites and forms that ask for a US phone number get one. Most apps and websites accept virtual numbers for sign-up codes. Some services, often banks, refuse them, so test anything important first.
- Your personal number stays private. Calls and texts from TINE show only your TINE number.
Many people use both: WhatsApp on their own mobile number for friends, family and international contacts, and TINE in the browser for US calls and texts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a TINE number for WhatsApp Business?
No. WhatsApp Business accepts landlines but not VoIP numbers, and TINE numbers are VoIP numbers.
Why do some websites say virtual numbers work with WhatsApp?
Some sellers mean carrier mobile numbers, or numbers that worked once and stopped. WhatsApp's own help page lists VoIP numbers as unsupported, and our test agreed. Treat any promise that a virtual number works with WhatsApp with caution.
Can US contacts reach me on WhatsApp if my number isn't American?
Yes. WhatsApp works the same with any number, so US contacts can message or call your existing number for free over the internet.
Will a TINE number work for Telegram, Signal or other apps?
It depends on the app. Many accept virtual numbers, and some refuse them. We're testing popular apps one by one and will publish each result as a dated test like this one.
What does a TINE US number cost?
$5 a month, $13.49 for 3 months, $25.99 for 6 months or $49.99 a year (about $4.17 a month), with pay-as-you-go calls and texts. See pricing.
The Bottom Line
A virtual number won't get you on WhatsApp, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you one for it. Keep WhatsApp on your mobile number, and if you need a US number for ordinary calls and texts with American contacts, that's what TINE is for.
