TextNow Not Available in Your Country? What Works Instead

TextNow only works in North America, and a VPN won't fix it. What works instead in India, Pakistan, Nigeria, the UK and more, from $5 a month.

Short answer: TextNow only lets people in the US and Canada sign up, and its help page says it doesn't work through a VPN. Most free alternatives have the same rule. If you live anywhere else, a paid number that accepts sign-ups from any country is the reliable option. TINE costs $5 a month, runs in your browser, and calls and texts US and Canadian numbers only.

Why TextNow Says It's Not Available in Your Country

The message isn't a bug, and reinstalling the app or switching phones won't change it. TextNow's help page on where it's available says the app is only available to download and use within North America. If you're outside North America, you can't register through the app or on the website.

The same rule applies to people who already have an account. TextNow's login help says it isn't supported in any country outside North America. So if you're asking whether TextNow works in India, Pakistan, Nigeria or the Philippines, the answer from TextNow itself is no.

Can a VPN Fix It?

No, and trying can cost you more than it saves:

  • TextNow blocks it. Its help page says that if you're using a VPN, you won't be able to log into the app.
  • Other free apps block it too. TextFree, a similar free app, says using a VPN to hide your location may get your account blocked.
  • You can lose the number. If an account is blocked, everything you verified with that number goes with it: your logins, your recovery codes, the contact you gave clients.

We don't recommend any workaround. A number you might lose without warning isn't worth putting on your accounts.

Which TextNow Alternatives Work Where You Live

Here's who each popular app lets sign up. Most of TextNow's alternatives have the same North America rule:

If you live in South Africa, Talkatone's app is available to you but Hushed isn't. In Kenya, Egypt, Indonesia or Vietnam, none of these apps lets you sign up except TINE.

The Options That Work Outside North America

TINE: from any country, in your browser

You sign up with your email and your own mobile number, from any country, and pick a US, Canadian or UK number. It runs in any web browser on your phone or computer, so there's nothing to download from an app store that might block your region.

What to know before you pay:

  • It's not free. A US number costs $5 a month or $49.99 a year, with pay-as-you-go calls and texts.
  • It reaches the US and Canada only. A TINE US number calls and texts US and Canadian numbers, not numbers in your home country.
  • Some services refuse virtual numbers. WhatsApp is one. More on this below.

Hushed: if you're in the UK, Europe or another supported country

Hushed sells US, Canadian and UK numbers in a phone app, from $6.99 a month. It isn't available in most of South Asia or Africa, and it has no web version.

Talkatone: if you're in one of its 16 countries

Talkatone gives a free US or Canadian number in its app in 16 countries, including the UK, Germany, Australia and South Africa. Check what the free plan includes before you rely on it, because free numbers can be taken back if you stop using them.

Already in the US or Canada?

Then TextNow works for you. For a full side-by-side comparison, see TINE vs TextNow. Canadians can also read how to get a US number in Canada.

Need It for Verification Codes?

This is the most common reason people look for a TextNow alternative, so here's the honest picture:

TINE numbers receive texts on every plan, with no add-on, and many services accept virtual numbers for sign-up codes. If one service matters to you, test it in your first month, and read why verification codes don't arrive if a code doesn't come through. For WhatsApp, Telegram and banking, keep using your own mobile number.

Want a TextNow Alternative for Your PC?

TINE runs in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox on Windows, Mac or a Chromebook. There's nothing to install: sign in, keep the tab open, and calls ring on your computer. Texts wait in your inbox until you open it.

Country Guides

If you're in one of these countries, the guide covers paying from there, time zones with US clients and local tips:

Avoid These "Solutions"

  • VPNs. Covered above: TextNow blocks them, and you risk losing the account.
  • Bought TextNow accounts or numbers. Sellers on social media and marketplaces offer ready-made accounts. TextNow can reclaim the number or block the account, and the seller may still be able to get into it.
  • Free "receive SMS online" websites. Anyone can read the codes on those pages, so anyone can take over the account you signed up for.

How to Get a US Number with TINE

  1. Go to tinetech.org and create an account with your email and your own mobile number. Your country code fills in automatically.
  2. Choose the United States and search by area code, for example New York (212) or Los Angeles (213).
  3. Pick a plan: $5 a month, $13.49 for 3 months, $25.99 for 6 months or $49.99 a year.
  4. Pay by card through Stripe's secure checkout.
  5. Start calling and texting in your browser straight away.

Each plan includes some calling and texting credit: $0.50 on the monthly plan, up to $8 on the annual plan. After that, calls cost $0.03 a minute out and $0.02 in, and texts $0.03 each, sent or received. You don't need ID documents, a US address or a US SIM.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is TextNow not available in my country?

TextNow only offers its service in North America. Its help page says that if you're outside North America, you can't register through the app or the website. It isn't a problem with your phone or your account.

Does TextNow work internationally?

Only in the sense that people in the US and Canada can call other countries with prepaid credit. TextNow says the app isn't supported outside North America, so you can't sign up abroad, and an existing account may not work while you're away.

Can I use TextNow with a VPN?

No. TextNow's help page says you won't be able to log in through a VPN, and similar apps say a VPN can get your account blocked.

Is there a free TextNow alternative outside the US?

Not one that works everywhere. Talkatone is free in 16 countries, including the UK, but not in India, Pakistan, Nigeria or the Philippines. Elsewhere, the reliable options are paid. Our guide to free second phone numbers explains the catches of the free apps.

What's the best TextNow alternative in India or Pakistan?

TextNow, TextFree, Talkatone, Google Voice, Burner, Sideline and Hushed all refuse sign-ups from India and Pakistan. TINE accepts them, for $5 a month, in your browser.

Can I use a TextNow alternative for WhatsApp?

Not a virtual number. WhatsApp doesn't accept VoIP numbers, from TINE or any other app. Keep WhatsApp on your own mobile number: US contacts can still message you there for free.

The Bottom Line

If TextNow says it isn't available in your country, there's no safe way around it, and most free apps say the same. TINE works from any country for $5 a month, in your browser, for calls and texts with the US and Canada.
