Short answer: You can get a real US phone number in Canada without a US address, a US SIM or ID documents. With TINE you sign up with your email and Canadian mobile number, pick a US area code and pay by card. It costs US$5 a month or US$49.99 a year, runs in your browser, and calls and texts both US and Canadian numbers.

Who Gets a US Number in Canada

  • Canadian businesses with US customers. Online stores, contractors and service businesses selling across the border. A US number on your US website and listings means American customers call a local number, and you can call and text them from it.
  • Freelancers and remote workers with US clients or employers. They can reach you on a +1 number in their own area code.
  • Snowbirds. If you spend the winter in Florida, Arizona or California, a US number gives landlords, doctors, clubs and deliveries a local number for you, and you can call home to Canada from it too.
  • People moving to the US for work or study, who want a US number to give out before they arrive.
  • US websites and apps that ask for a US phone number. Most accept virtual numbers. Some, often banks, don't, so test anything important first.

Canada and the US share the +1 country code, so Americans already dial you without an international prefix. What a US number changes is how you look to them: a local area code instead of a Canadian one, and a number that US forms and systems accept as American.

Your Options for a US Number in Canada

Canadians have more choices than people in most countries, because several US apps also work in Canada:

Checked October 2026. These rules change, so check each provider's page before you pay. More detail: TINE vs Google Voice, TINE vs Hushed, TINE vs Burner and TINE vs TextNow.

If you want a free number and don't mind ads, TextNow and Talkatone are worth a look. Hushed and Burner are phone apps. Choose TINE if you want to use your number in a browser on your laptop as well as your phone, share it with a team, or pay US$5 a month with no ads.

What You Need, and What It Can't Do

You don't need ID documents, a US address, a US bank account or a Social Security number. You need:

  • An internet connection: home internet, Wi-Fi or mobile data.
  • A credit or debit card that can pay in US dollars (see the payment section below).
  • A web browser on your laptop or phone.

What it does that most people don't expect: a TINE US number calls and texts Canadian numbers as well as US ones, at the same rates. You can text a customer in Ohio and your family in Ontario from the same number.

Before you buy, know these limits:

  1. It only calls and texts US and Canadian numbers. Calls to other countries aren't supported.
  2. Some services refuse all virtual numbers. WhatsApp is one: it wouldn't register a TINE number in our test. Banks and some payment apps often refuse them too. If a sign-up code matters, test that service first, or read why verification codes don't arrive.
  3. Calls ring while TINE is open in a browser tab. Texts wait in your inbox until you open it. iPhone and Android apps are coming.
  4. It can't call emergency services. Use your mobile's own dialler for 911, in Canada or the US.

Want a second Canadian number instead? TINE sells Canadian numbers at the same price.

For Snowbirds: Using a US Number While You're in the US

If you spend months in the US, a TINE number works anywhere you have internet:

  • Call and text over Wi-Fi in your rental or condo, to US and Canadian numbers, at $0.03 a minute for outgoing calls and $0.03 a text, taken from your plan's credit.
  • Give local contacts a US number. Your landlord, doctor or golf club can call a local number, not a Canadian one.
  • Keep your Canadian number on your phone for your bank, family and anything tied to it.

If you'd otherwise pay a daily roaming fee, calling over Wi-Fi can cost much less. Bell's Roam Better, for example, is C$13 a day in the US (checked October 2026).

Time zones aren't a problem. Canada and the US use the same time zones and change their clocks on the same dates, so a 9 a.m. call in Toronto is 9 a.m. in New York. The exceptions are most of Saskatchewan and Yukon, which don't change their clocks.

Paying from Canada

Plans are billed in US dollars through Stripe's secure checkout, so your card converts the amount to Canadian dollars. Before you pay, check these:

  • Conversion fees. Many Canadian credit cards add a fee on top of the exchange rate when you pay in another currency. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada uses 2.5% as its example. Your card agreement shows your rate.
  • No-fee and US-dollar cards. Some cards don't charge a conversion fee, and a US-dollar card or account, if you already have one for cross-border shopping, avoids the conversion altogether.
  • The annual plan is US$49.99, instead of US$60 for twelve monthly payments.

How to Get a US Number in Canada with TINE

  1. Go to tinetech.org and create an account with your email. If you're in Canada, the country code fills in as +1 for Canada automatically. Enter your mobile number, for example 416 555 0148.
  2. Choose the United States and search by area code. Pick the area code of the city where most of your customers are, or where you spend the winter: for example Fort Lauderdale (954), Fort Myers and Naples (239), Tampa (813), Orlando (407), Phoenix (602, 480) or Palm Springs (760). For business, big-city codes like New York (212) or Chicago (312) work well. If an area code has nothing available, try a nearby one.
  3. Pick a plan. It's US$5 a month, US$13.49 for 3 months, US$25.99 for 6 months or US$49.99 a year.
  4. Pay by card through Stripe's secure checkout.
  5. Start calling and texting straight away in your browser.

What It Costs

All prices are in US dollars. A US number costs $5 a month, $13.49 for 3 months, $25.99 for 6 months or $49.99 a year (about $4.17 a month). Each plan comes with some calling and texting credit: $0.50 on the monthly plan, up to $8 on the annual plan. After that you pay as you go, and you can top up from $5. The rates are the same whether you call a US or a Canadian number:

UsagePrice (USD)
Outgoing calls$0.03 per minute
Incoming calls$0.02 per minute
Texts (SMS), sent or received$0.03 per 160-character segment
Picture messages (MMS)$0.04 each

For example, a snowbird who makes 200 minutes of calls a month (to US and Canadian numbers) and sends 100 texts uses about $9 of credit: $6 for the calls and $3 for the texts. To estimate your own month, use the cost calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a US address, a Social Security number or ID?

No. You sign up with your email and your Canadian mobile number. TINE doesn't ask for ID documents, a US address, an SSN or a US SIM card.

Can I call and text Canadian numbers from my US number?

Yes. A TINE US number calls and texts both US and Canadian numbers, at the same rates.

Will people see my Canadian number?

No. Calls and texts from TINE show your TINE number as the caller ID. Your Canadian number is never shown.

Can I use my US number for WhatsApp or US banking apps?

WhatsApp, no: it doesn't accept virtual numbers, and it wouldn't register a TINE number when we tested it. Many banks and payment apps refuse virtual numbers too. Use your Canadian mobile number for those.

Can I get a Canadian number from TINE too?

Do I need to install an app?

No. TINE runs in any web browser on your laptop or phone. iPhone and Android apps are coming.

The Bottom Line

If you sell to American customers, work for US clients or spend the winter in the US, a US number makes you look local and easy to reach. A TINE US number costs US$5 a month, runs in your browser and calls and texts Canada too.
