Short answer: You can get a real US (+1) phone number in France without ID documents, a US SIM, a US address or a Social Security number. With TINE you sign up with your email and your French mobile number, pick a US area code and pay by card. It costs $5 a month or $49.99 a year and runs in your browser. It calls and texts US and Canadian numbers, not French ones.

Who Gets a US Number in France

  • Freelancers, agencies and startups with US clients. A +1 number on your website, email signature and invoices lets American clients call and text you like a local contact, without international rates.
  • Online shops selling to the US. A US support line your American customers can call or text at local rates.
  • People moving to the US for study, a job or a VIE posting. You can give a US number to landlords, schools and employers before you arrive.
  • Families with relatives in the US. About 168,500 French people were registered with consulates in the US at the end of 2025. Their friends and family in France can give them a US number to call from a normal American plan.
  • US websites and apps that ask for a US phone number. Most accept virtual numbers. Some, often banks, don't, so test anything important first.

Your Options in France

Unlike most countries outside North America, France has a few real choices. Here's how they compare:

OptionWorks from France?What to know
Google Voice (personal)NoPersonal Google Voice is only available in the US
Google Voice for Google WorkspaceFor businessesOffered in France, but numbers outside your home country need the top Voice Premier tier, on top of a Workspace plan
TextNowNoIt's only available in North America
TalkatoneYesIts app is available in France and gives a free US number. Accounts that stay inactive for over a month are deleted
HushedYesPhone app with US, Canadian and UK numbers, from $6.99 a month. No web version
Numero eSIMYesLists US numbers from €4 a month in its app
TINEYesUS, Canadian and UK numbers in any browser, from $5 a month

Checked November 2026. These rules change, so check each provider's page before you pay. More detail: TINE vs Google Voice, TINE vs Hushed and does Google Voice work outside the US?

Which to choose: if you want a free number and use it often, Talkatone is worth a look. If you want a phone app, Hushed and Numero both work in France. Choose TINE if you want to call and text from your laptop as well as your phone, share a number with a team, or have a US and a UK number on the same account.

What You Need, and What It Can't Do

You don't need ID documents, a US address, a US bank account or a Social Security number. You need:

  • An internet connection: fibre, Wi-Fi or 4G/5G.
  • A debit or credit card that can pay in US dollars (see the payment section below).
  • A web browser on your laptop or phone.

Before you buy, know these limits:

  1. It only calls and texts US and Canadian numbers. You can't call or text French (+33) numbers with it, so keep your French SIM for calls in France.
  2. Some services refuse all virtual numbers. WhatsApp is one: it wouldn't register a TINE number in our test. If a sign-up code matters, test that service first, or read why verification codes don't arrive.
  3. Calls ring while TINE is open in a browser tab. Texts wait in your inbox until you open it. iPhone and Android apps are coming.
  4. It can't call emergency services. Use your mobile's own dialler for 112, 15, 17 or 18.

Paying from France

Plans are billed in US dollars by card through Stripe's secure checkout, so your bank converts the amount to euros.

  • Traditional banks charge for it. For example, Société Générale charges 2.7% plus €1 per payment outside the euro zone, and BNP Paribas 2.9% plus €0.90, according to comparison sites in October 2026.
  • Online banks usually don't. BoursoBank, Fortuneo and N26 say card payments in foreign currencies are free on their cards. Check the conditions of your card.
  • The annual plan saves the fixed fee. If your bank charges around €1 per foreign payment, paying once a year ($49.99) instead of twelve times also saves eleven fixed fees, on top of the cheaper price.

Working US Hours from France

Paris is 6 hours ahead of New York and 9 hours ahead of Los Angeles for most of the year:

US city9 a.m. there is this in France5 p.m. there is this in France
New York, Miami (Eastern)3 p.m.11 p.m.
Chicago (Central)4 p.m.Midnight
San Francisco, Los Angeles (Pacific)6 p.m.2 a.m.

Europe and the US change their clocks on different dates, so for a few weeks a year the gap is an hour smaller. In spring 2027, US clocks go forward on 14 March and French clocks on 28 March, so for those two weeks New York is only 5 hours behind.

A French business open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. overlaps with the US East Coast for 3 hours a day (3 p.m. to 6 p.m.), and with the West Coast only if someone stays late. Put your phone hours in US time on your US-facing pages, for example "Phone: 9 a.m.–noon ET", and keep TINE open in a tab during that window.

Need a UK Number Instead?

About 172,000 British people held a residence document in France in 2025, and many still need a UK number for family, friends and UK services. TINE sells real UK mobile numbers (+44 7) too, from $8 a month, and you can keep a US and a UK number on the same account.

Two things to know:

  • A TINE UK number calls and texts UK numbers only.
  • Don't rely on it for UK bank codes. Some UK banks only send one-time passcodes to UK mobile numbers from a carrier. For example, Nationwide says its codes can only be received on a mobile phone with a UK number. Check with your bank, and use its app's own approval method where you can.

How to Get a US Number in France with TINE

  1. Go to tinetech.org and create an account with your email. If you're in France, the country code fills in as +33 automatically. Enter your mobile number, for example 06 12 34 56 78. A leading 0 is fine.
  2. Choose the United States and search by area code. Pick the city where most of your clients or contacts are, or a well-known one: New York (212, 646), Los Angeles (213, 310), San Francisco (415), Miami (305) or Washington, DC (202). If an area code has nothing available, try a nearby one.
  3. Pick a plan. It's $5 a month, $13.49 for 3 months, $25.99 for 6 months or $49.99 a year.
  4. Pay by card through Stripe's secure checkout.
  5. Start calling and texting straight away in your browser.

What It Costs

A US number costs $5 a month, $13.49 for 3 months, $25.99 for 6 months or $49.99 a year (about $4.17 a month). Each plan comes with some calling and texting credit: $0.50 on the monthly plan, up to $8 on the annual plan. After that you pay as you go, and you can top up from $5:

UsagePrice
Outgoing calls$0.035 per minute
Incoming calls$0.03 per minute
Texts (SMS), sent or received$0.03 per 160-character segment
Picture messages (MMS)$0.04 each

For example, a consultant who has five 30-minute calls with US clients a month (three they make and two they receive) and sends 30 texts uses about $4.80 of credit: $2.70 for the outgoing calls, $1.20 for the incoming calls and $0.90 for the texts. To estimate your own month, use the cost calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need ID, a US address, a Social Security number or a US SIM?

No. You sign up with your email and your French mobile number. TINE doesn't ask for ID documents, a US address, an SSN or a US SIM card.

Can I call French numbers with my US number?

No. A TINE US number only calls and texts US and Canadian numbers. Use your French SIM for calls in France.

Is there a free option in France?

Talkatone gives a free US number in France, but its account is deleted if it stays inactive for over a month. If you need a number that stays yours, a paid plan is safer.

Can I use my US number for WhatsApp?

No. WhatsApp doesn't accept virtual numbers, and it wouldn't register a TINE number when we tested it. Keep WhatsApp on your French number: US contacts can still message you there.

Can I have a US number and a UK number?

Yes. Add each number from the Numbers page in your account. Each has its own plan: $5 a month for a US number and $8 a month for a UK number.

Do I need to install an app?

No. TINE runs in any web browser on your laptop or phone. iPhone and Android apps are coming.

The Bottom Line

France has more options than most countries, so choose by how you'll use the number. If you want it on your laptop as well as your phone, want it to stay yours, or need a UK number as well, TINE gives you a US number from $5 a month, in your browser, with no ID.
