Short answer: You can get a real US (+1) phone number in Vietnam without ID documents, a US SIM, a US address or a Social Security number. With TINE you sign up with your email and your Vietnamese mobile number, pick a US area code and pay with an international Visa or Mastercard. It costs $5 a month or $49.99 a year and runs in your browser. It calls and texts US and Canadian numbers, not Vietnamese ones, and Zalo accepted it when we tested it.

Who Gets a US Number in Vietnam

  • Freelancers and IT outsourcing staff. Developers, designers and testers working for US clients can give them a +1 number to call and text, without international rates or working out how to dial +84.
  • Online sellers with US customers. Vietnamese sellers are growing fast on US marketplaces: products sold by Vietnamese sellers on Amazon rose nearly 35% between January and July 2025. A US number gives your Shopify or Etsy store a support line your US customers can call and text at local rates.
  • Virtual assistants and remote staff who call vendors and customers on behalf of a US business.
  • Family in the US. Relatives in California, Texas or elsewhere can call a US number from their normal plan.
  • US websites and apps that ask for a US phone number. Most accept virtual numbers. Some, often banks, don't, so test anything important first.

Why Most Second-Number Apps Won't Work for You

Most popular second-number apps don't let you sign up from Vietnam:

AppCan you sign up from Vietnam? Why
Google VoiceNoPersonal Google Voice is only available in the US
TextNowNoIt's only available in North America, and it doesn't work through a VPN
HushedNoVietnam is on Hushed's list of countries where the app isn't available
TalkatoneNoIt's only in 16 countries' app stores, and Vietnam isn't one of them
BurnerNoYou need a US, Canadian or Australian main number to sign up
Numero eSIMCheck firstIts iPhone app lists a US number from $3.49 a month. Check that it's available in Vietnam before you pay
TINEYesSign up with your email and Vietnamese number, and use it in any browser

Checked October 2026. These rules change, so check each provider's page before you pay. More detail: does Google Voice work outside the US?, TextNow not available in your country? and Hushed alternatives

What You Need, and What It Can't Do

You don't need ID documents, a US address, a US bank account or a Social Security number. You need:

  • An internet connection: fibre, Wi-Fi or 4G/5G mobile data.
  • A Visa or Mastercard that can pay foreign websites (see the payment section below).
  • A web browser on your laptop or phone.

Before you buy, know these limits:

  1. It only calls and texts US and Canadian numbers. You can't call or text Vietnamese (+84) numbers with it, so keep your Vietnamese SIM for calls at home.
  2. Some services refuse all virtual numbers. WhatsApp is one: it wouldn't register a TINE number in our test. Zalo is different: it accepted a TINE US number when we tested it in October 2026. If a sign-up code matters for another service, test that service first.
  3. Calls ring while TINE is open in a browser tab. Texts wait in your inbox until you open it. iPhone and Android apps are coming.
  4. It can't call emergency services. Use your mobile's own dialler for 113, 114 or 115.

Keep a backup connection. Vietnam's international internet runs through a handful of undersea cables, and faults are common: in August 2026, a fourth cable fault disrupted international connections further, with three others still out of service. Calls from TINE work from Vietnam like any internet call, but having both home internet and mobile data means one slow connection doesn't cost you a client call.

Paying from Vietnam

Plans are billed in US dollars by card through Stripe's secure checkout.

  • Use an international Visa or Mastercard. Most Vietnamese banks issue debit and credit cards that can pay foreign websites. Check in your bank app that online payments abroad are switched on.
  • Expect a foreign currency fee. Banks usually charge 1% to 4% of the payment for paying in another currency. For example, Techcombank charges 1.1% on its Visa debit cards, and VPBank 2.5% to 3% on international debit cards.
  • Tax on foreign digital services. Since July 2025, Vietnam's VAT law covers foreign companies selling digital services, and when an individual pays by card, banks or payment companies are required to withhold the tax. So the amount on your statement can be a little higher than the price.
  • E-wallets. We couldn't confirm that MoMo, ZaloPay or VNPay can pay foreign websites, so use a card.

Tip: the annual plan is one payment a year instead of twelve, and it works out to about $4.17 a month.

Working US Hours from Vietnam

Vietnam is on Indochina Time (UTC+7) all year, with no daylight saving, so most US-facing work happens in the evening and at night:

US city9 a.m. there is this in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City5 p.m. there is this in Vietnam
New York (Eastern)8 p.m. (summer) / 9 p.m. (winter)4 a.m. / 5 a.m.
Chicago, Houston (Central)9 p.m. / 10 p.m.5 a.m. / 6 a.m.
Los Angeles, San Jose (Pacific)11 p.m. / midnight7 a.m. / 8 a.m.

Summer is mid-March to early November, when US clocks are on daylight saving time. US clocks go back on 1 November 2026, so from then on, US working hours start an hour later in Vietnam.

  • Pick a daily overlap of 2 to 4 hours at the start of the US day, and put it on your profile in US time, for example "Available 9 a.m.–12 p.m. ET".
  • West Coast clients are the easiest overlap. Their afternoon is your early morning, so a 7 a.m. start in Vietnam catches the end of the Californian working day.
  • Open TINE during your overlap and keep the tab open, so calls ring through.

How to Get a US Number in Vietnam with TINE

  1. Go to tinetech.org and create an account with your email. If you're in Vietnam, the country code fills in as +84 automatically. Enter your mobile number, for example 0912 345 678. A leading 0 is fine.
  2. Choose the United States and search by area code. If your clients or customers are in one city, use theirs. Otherwise, pick one from a large Vietnamese-American community: Los Angeles, San Jose and Houston have the most. Try Orange County (714, 657), Los Angeles (213, 310), San Jose (408) or Houston (713, 832). For a business, New York (212) is recognised everywhere. If an area code has nothing available, try a nearby one.
  3. Pick a plan. It's $5 a month, $13.49 for 3 months, $25.99 for 6 months or $49.99 a year.
  4. Pay by card through Stripe's secure checkout.
  5. Start calling and texting straight away in your browser.

What It Costs

A US number costs $5 a month, $13.49 for 3 months, $25.99 for 6 months or $49.99 a year (about $4.17 a month). Each plan comes with some calling and texting credit: $0.50 on the monthly plan, up to $8 on the annual plan. After that you pay as you go, and you can top up from $5:

UsagePrice
Outgoing calls$0.035 per minute
Incoming calls$0.03 per minute
Texts (SMS), sent or received$0.03 per 160-character segment
Picture messages (MMS)$0.04 each

For example, an online store that takes 60 minutes of customer calls a month and sends 50 order texts uses about $2.70 of credit: $1.20 for the calls and $1.50 for the texts. To estimate your own month, use the cost calculator.

Tips for Sellers and Freelancers in Vietnam

  • Keep marketplace and bank verification on your own number. Use your Vietnamese mobile to verify Etsy, Amazon, Upwork and your bank, and use the US number as the contact line for clients and customers.
  • Only text customers who asked you to. US carriers filter business texts, and order updates a customer signed up for are fine. Mass marketing texts without consent aren't.
  • Share one number with your team. If several people handle support, TINE Teams gives you shared numbers, roles and a shared contact list.
  • Write the number the American way on your store: (714) 555-0148, or +1 714 555 0148 if international visitors see it too.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the US country code?

+1. The US shares it with Canada. A US number is +1 followed by a 3-digit area code and a 7-digit number, for example +1 212 555 0148.

Do I need ID, a US address, a Social Security number or a US SIM?

No. You sign up with your email and your Vietnamese mobile number. TINE doesn't ask for ID documents, a US address, an SSN or a US SIM card.

Can I call Vietnamese numbers with my US number?

No. A TINE US number only calls and texts US and Canadian numbers. Use your Vietnamese SIM for calls at home.

Can I use a US number for Zalo or WhatsApp?

Zalo, yes: it accepted a TINE US number when we tested it in October 2026, so you can have a Zalo account on your US number. WhatsApp, no: it doesn't accept virtual numbers, and it wouldn't register a TINE number when we tested it. Keep WhatsApp on your Vietnamese number.

Which cards can I pay with?

An international Visa or Mastercard, debit or credit, that's enabled for online payments abroad. Your bank adds its foreign currency fee, and tax may be withheld on the payment.

Do I need to install an app?

No. TINE runs in any web browser on your laptop or phone. iPhone and Android apps are coming.

The Bottom Line

If you work with US clients or sell to US customers from Vietnam, a US number makes you easy to reach. Google Voice, TextNow, Hushed, Talkatone and Burner don't let you sign up from Vietnam. TINE does, from $5 a month, in your browser, with no ID.
