Short answer: Hushed is a good second-number app if you live where it's offered and want a phone app with unlimited local talk and text. But it isn't available in 35 countries, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, the Philippines, Kenya and Malaysia, and you can't use it without downloading it from the App Store or Google Play. TINE works from any country, runs in your browser, and a US number costs $5 a month.

Why People Look for a Hushed Alternative

Most people searching for an app like Hushed hit one of these walls:

  • "Hushed is not available in your country." The app isn't in your App Store or Google Play region.
  • No computer version. Hushed runs on iPhone and Android only.
  • Price. Unlimited plans start at $6.99 a month and prepaid plans at $7.99, which is more than a light user needs.

If none of those apply to you, Hushed may be the right app, and we say so below.

Where Hushed Isn't Available

Hushed's own country list (updated 26 October 2026) says the app is not available in:

RegionCountries where Hushed isn't available
South AsiaIndia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan
Southeast AsiaPhilippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar
AfricaNigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, South Africa, Uganda, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Liberia, Niger, Somalia
Middle East and Central AsiaIran, Syria, Yemen, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Cyprus
AmericasColombia, Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic
East AsiaMainland China

The same page warns that even if you get the app "using unconventional methods", Hushed can't guarantee calling or other features will work. Hushed's download help also says it isn't possible to use Hushed without first installing it from the App Store or Google Play.

So switching your store region or using a VPN isn't a real fix. If calls stop working, you've paid for a number you can't rely on, and every account you verified with it is at risk.

Two things stand out. First, in most of the countries Hushed blocks, every other popular app blocks you too, so the realistic choice is TINE or nothing. Second, South Africa is the exception: Talkatone's app is available there even though Hushed isn't.

The Alternatives in Detail

TINE: from any country, in your browser

TINE gives you a real US, Canadian or UK number that you use in any web browser, on your phone or your computer. You sign up with your email and your own mobile number, from any country, and there's no app store to block your region.

What to know before you pay:

  • It's pay-as-you-go, not unlimited. A US or Canadian number costs $5 a month or $49.99 a year, with some calling and texting credit included. After that, calls are $0.035 a minute out and $0.03 in, and texts $0.03 each. A UK number costs $8 a month.
  • It reaches its own country. A US or Canadian number calls and texts US and Canadian numbers; a UK number reaches the UK.
  • HD voice calls, a shared inbox for teams and a developer API are included.
  • No ID documents. You don't need a US address, a US SIM or a passport scan.

If you text a lot every day, Hushed's unlimited plan can work out cheaper. If you use your number for clients, sign-ups and the odd call, $5 a month usually covers it.

Talkatone: free, in 16 countries

Talkatone gives a free US or Canadian number in its app to people in the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Mexico and South Africa. It's the best free option if you're in one of those. Free numbers can be taken back if you stop using them, so don't put anything important on one. Our guide to free second phone numbers covers the catches.

Burner: for people already in the US, Canada or Australia

Burner is the closest app to Hushed, with disposable numbers you can switch out. It needs a US, Canadian or Australian main number to sign up, so it isn't an option for most people looking abroad. See our burner app roundup for more.

TextNow and Google Voice: free, but North America only

Both are free and both work in a browser, but only if you're in the US (Google Voice) or North America (TextNow). Neither lets you sign up from abroad, and a VPN won't change that. More in TextNow not available in your country? and does Google Voice work outside the US?

Is There a Hushed Alternative for PC?

Yes. Hushed has no web or desktop version, but TINE runs in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox on Windows, Mac or a Chromebook. Sign in, keep the tab open, and calls ring on your computer. Texts wait in your inbox until you open it. TextNow and Google Voice also work in a browser, but only for people in North America and the US.

When Hushed Is Still the Better Choice

We'd rather you pick the right app than the wrong one:

  • You want unlimited talk and text and you text a lot. Hushed's subscription covers that; TINE charges per use.
  • You want several numbers on one plan. Hushed sells 1-line and 3-line subscriptions.
  • You want a phone app today and you live in a country Hushed serves.

A Note on Verification Codes

Every app here gives you a virtual (VoIP) number, Hushed included. Many services accept them for sign-up codes, but some refuse all of them. WhatsApp wouldn't register a TINE number in our test, and many banks want a carrier mobile number. If one service matters to you, test it in your first month, and read why verification codes don't arrive if a code doesn't come through.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best alternative to Hushed?

If you live in a country Hushed blocks, or you want to use your number on a computer, TINE: it accepts sign-ups from any country, runs in your browser and costs $5 a month for a US number. If you're in one of Talkatone's 16 countries and want something free, Talkatone. If you're in the US and want disposable numbers, Burner.

Why does Hushed say it's not available in my country?

Hushed doesn't offer its app in 35 countries, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Kenya, Egypt, South Africa and Malaysia. It isn't a problem with your phone or your account.

Can I use Hushed with a VPN?

Hushed says that if the app is installed by unconventional methods, it can't guarantee calling or other features will work, and it can't be used without downloading it from the App Store or Google Play. We don't recommend it: a number that might stop working isn't worth putting on your accounts.

Is Hushed available in India or Pakistan?

No. Both are on Hushed's list of countries where the app isn't available, as are Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. TINE works in all four.

Can I use Hushed on my computer?

No. Hushed runs on iPhone and Android only. TINE runs in any web browser on Windows, Mac or a Chromebook.

Is there a free app like Hushed?

Talkatone is free in 16 countries, and TextNow and Google Voice are free in North America and the US. Outside those countries, there's no reliable free option.

The Bottom Line

Hushed is a solid app where it's offered. If it isn't offered where you live, or you want to call and text from your laptop, TINE works from any country, in your browser, from $5 a month.
